“Grand Bazar can be opened to e-commerce like Alibaba.com”
Porter Erisman, Previous Vice President of one of the world's biggest e-commerce sites Alibaba.com, told “the system in Grand Bazar is the same with retail system in China. You negotiate with seller face to face for the products. You can start e-commerce by building brands like Alibaba.com from scratch”.
Erisman: “We are at the beginning of a golden era in e-commerce across the world. Sitting in İzmir, you can sell some products in a country to another country without bringing them to Turkey. You can achieve this by creating the connection between buyer and seller”.
Erisman: “Do not be afraid of large-scale companies as an entrepreneur. Do not make light of your rivals but do not underestimate yourself either. The bigger the problem is, the bigger the chance is as well. Do not get paralyzed with the fear of crisis. Think how to turn crises into chances”.
Alibaba.com made a great influence on the second day of Turkish Innovation Week held in İzmir by Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM) and Aegean Exporters Union (EIB) with support of Ministry of Economy.
Taking place with support of İzmir Development Agency and İzmir Metropolitan Municipality and under sponsorship of Turkish Economy Bank and Turkish Airlines, Turkish Innovation Week welcomed Porter Erisman who is previous Vice President of Alibaba.com which is centered in China and one of the biggest e-commerce sites of the world. Youngsters, academicians and business world showed great attention to the event. Having given a conference in the event, Erisman advised that Grand Bazar, which is world-famous historical heritage of Turkey, should enter into e-commerce.
Erisman opened his speech telling story of a crazy Chinese entrepreneur Jack Ma who started in an apartment house and turned Alibaba.com company into one of the biggest e-commerce companies of the world. Erisman told “Jack Ma was an English teacher. He never lived abroad. He did not have business experience. However, he built a magnificent global company. He became one of the three richest people in China. Yesterday's value of Alibaba.com which he built was 180 billion dollars. He created such a market that it sells more products than both of amazon.com and ebay.com. They made 14,3 billion dollar sale on Bachelorette's Day which is celebrated on November 11th in China”. Stating that as much as Ma's strong personality, his taking correct steps towards the need was also effective in success of Alibaba.com, Erisman told:
Chinese people are as brainy as Americans
“While Jack Ma was building his company in 1999, amazon.com and ebay.com were dominating the world. Everyone was wondering which company would dominate the world. Jack Ma called a couple of friends to his apartment and told them 'Many will change in next 5-10 years. We are not a company of high-technology, we cannot be successful, Americans have such a strong hardware.. You might think. However, we, Chinese, are quite smart. We are as brainy as them. We can have courage. No one can beat us if we know what to do as a team. We can also receive support of governmental institutions because we are innovative. Internet is a balloon that will never pop. We will pay a price by working really hard but we can be successful'. He encouraged his confused friends with these words. Jack Ma also understood entrepreneurs really well; he encouraged people instead of controlling them. He told 'come to Alibaba.com, tell what you want, you have the power' and became successful. He turned trade into online in a society that communicates face to face. He formed a secured communication network. People know each other and can negotiate on price”.
Create brands and start
Stressing upon the fact that Grand Bazar, Turkey's world-famous historical heritage, has a structure that is quite similar to small shops in China, Erisman told that Alibaba.com comes from such an initiative and this only requires human brain, computer and internet connection. Erisman stated “You see a product in Grand Bazar and bargain with seller. The retail system in China is the same. You create an environment of trust between buyer and seller. We built tmall.com which is similar. You can see a product, call call-center for 7/24, tell your expectations and get replied immediately. It is just like going to Grand Bazar and getting an answer from seller. You can create your brands from scratch and start doing this”.
Do not be afraid of big companies as entrepreneurs
Indicating that e-commerce is at the beginning of a golden era across the world and that China proved this, Erisman advised entrepreneurs in Turkey as such:
