“Relations between Turkey and European Union should not be structured by such emotional, subjective and shortsighted moves.”

President of Turkish Exporters Assembly(TİM) Mehmet Büyükekşi issued a press statement about the decision taken by European Parliament about Turkey.

President Büyükekşi stated:

The result of the voting in European Parliament was not a surprise for us. However, it is still upsetting to see such a voting and a result throughout our 50-year-old membership process. We are expecting more objective and constructive criticisms and reports that promotes cooperation form European foundations.

Half of our exports are going to Europe and 2 of 3 investors in Turkey coming from Europe, today. Both of the sides demand Customs Union to be updated and we are working on it together. However, the decision of bringing political criteria to Customs Union taken in the Parliament is both contrarian to spirit of trade and damaging both side's interests. Same as last time, we are expecting European Union Commission to veto the decision of European Parliament. Relations between Turkey and European Union should not be structured by such emotional, subjective and shortsighted moves.
